Use LinkedIn for Market Research

Last week, we talked about "what" to listen for as you use social media for market research. This week, we're going to begin to address "how" to use social media for market research—specifically with LinkedIn "Answers."

If you don't already have one , you will need a LinkedIn account. Once you set up your account and log in, click on "More..." in the navigation bar toward the top of the screen and drill down to "Answers."

From the Answers Home page, you can ask a question, answer a question, or browse questions and answers that others have posted to get a sense of what people are talking about.

Keep in mind that when you ask or answer questions, your input is searchable. So, when appropriate, include the keywords that you think people would search with if they wanted to read the type of information you are posting. Not only does the "Answers" function allow you to search what others have posted, when you add value to the conversation, you can begin to position yourself as a subject matter expert in your field.

Side note:
As you use LinkedIn, you may notice that many people do not complete their profiles. This is a common mistake. Keep in mind that a LinkedIn profile is searchable, so you should use all of the fields to their full potential.
