The following information come from Dr. Jakob Nielsen, who according to U.S. News and World Report is “the world’s leading expert on Web usability,”

“People rarely read Web pages word by word; instead they scan the page, picking out individual words and sentences.” Research indicates that 79% of test users scanned, rather than read, web pages.

Reading on a computer screen rather than paper is more tiring on they eyes. It is estimated that computer screen reading is about 25% slower than reading on paper.

Some of the elements that increased a page’s scanability include: highlighted keywords, use of headings and sub-headings, bulleted lists, and using only half the word count of conventional writing.
