Fresh Ideas, Historic Setting -
The history of Livery
The J.J. White Transfer and Livery building,
located at 322 South Patterson Boulevard, was built
beginning "sometime in 1907," according to
written histories of the area. At that time Patterson
Boulevard was part of the Miami and Erie Canal, and
the Livery was located "just north of the lock."
John White operated a successful furniture transfer
business in Dayton for twelve years using large horse-drawn
carts—forerunners of the modern moving van—to move
personal belongings to and from the canal and nearby
cities. White stabled horses on the second floor of
the building, and stored carriages below.
The building was vacant from 1982 until its purchase
by Norman and Janet Wentland in the summer of 1989.
The Wentlands then restored the building according to
strict National Park Service historical restoration
standards. Today the Livery (named in honor of Mr. White's
original vision) is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. It is the Galactic Headquarters for Concept Company.
